McCain Celebrated 69th Birthday as Katrina Hit

McCain blasted Bush's handling of Katrina today, saying, "I would’ve landed my airplane at the nearest Air Force base and come over personally."

Huh. I wonder what Bush was up to when Katrina was hitting New Orleans.

Luckily we have a picture.

I shit you not:

McCain's 69th Birthday party. I wonder if he got around to telling Bush to take care of New Orleans.

Yeah, probably not. Cake!!!

a) The levees were determined to be beyond repair at midnight that night. This picture is earlier in the day. So, at this point, they couldn't have known how serious the situation would become.
b) McCain's criticism is of Bush's choice to fly over the area, rather than stop in. They don't appear to be flying at this point. Clearly McCain's comments refer to another point in time.
c) Really, I imagine having the President drop by a disaster area in the middle of said disaster is detrimental to the area. Rather than focusing on rescue and recovery, the authorities in the area have to focus on photo ops, protection details, and travel. Even if the President gets his hands dirty, he does less to help than the hundreds of distracted police officers could be doing. Presidential visits are best saved for a time when the worst is over, and everybody is already relatively safe.

Anon-

I know what I was doing the day Katrina hit. Watching a satellite map and thinking, "Holy shit, they are fucked."

Then I had a birthday party on a tarmac. Woo!
